Introduction: Feel the Real Vibe of Tokyo at an Event

Hi! I’m Ken, the editor-in-chief of Tokyo Insider Guide.

September in Tokyo is the best season for a city stroll, as the summer heat subsides and the pleasant autumn breeze begins to blow. During this time, various events where you can directly feel the city’s vibrant energy are held all over Tokyo.

This isn’t just another event list. It’s a special two-part guide where I (Ken) have carefully selected events that I confidently recommend as “must-go” from a local’s perspective, complete with a “Main Event List” to help you with your planning. Let’s enjoy September in Tokyo to the fullest!

【Ken’s Choice】My 5 Absolute-Best Event Picks for This Month

Among the many events out there, I’ve handpicked five that I can vouch for to give you the best experience.

①【Gourmet】A Festival for Meat Lovers: Niku-Matsuri (Meat Festival) 2025 in Hibiya Park

This is one of Japan’s largest food festivals, bringing together famous meat dish restaurants from all over the country. From brand-name beef steaks and expertly crafted hamburgers to popular karaage (fried chicken), every kind of meat dish imaginable awaits you.

Ken’s Point: It gets extremely crowded, so if you’re going with friends, a smart strategy is to split up, line up for different stalls, and share the food.

  • Dates (2025): September 13 (Sat) – 15 (Mon, Holiday)

②【Tradition】Experience the Vibe of Old Tokyo: Nezu Shrine Grand Festival

An energetic autumn festival in the old downtown area with over 300 years of history. The rows of food stalls (yatai) along the shrine path and the sight of the magnificent mikoshi (portable shrine) being paraded through the streets are must-sees. You can feel the authentic, local energy of Tokyo.

Ken’s Point: The best way to spend a fulfilling day is to combine it with a stroll through the nearby Yanesen area (Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi).

  • Dates (Annual): September 20 (Sat) – 21 (Sun)

③【Art】The Joy of Finding One-of-a-Kind Pieces: Mashiko Pottery Market in Ebisu Garden Place

Mashiko-yaki is a famous type of pottery from Tochigi Prefecture. This popular traveling market brings the artists and their works to Ebisu. You’ll find pieces with unique character from a wide range of artists, from up-and-coming to veteran.

Ken’s Point: The biggest appeal is being able to talk directly with the artists while searching for your own favorite piece. You can find the best souvenir that will become a memory of your trip.

  • Dates (2025): September 20 (Sat) – 21 (Sun)

④【Night Sky】A Spectacle in the Autumn Sky: Chofu Fireworks 2025

Easily accessible from the city center, this is one of Tokyo’s leading fireworks displays, with about 10,000 fireworks launched. The main highlight is the “Hanabi-llusion,” a show where fireworks are perfectly synchronized with movies and music. The massive blooms lighting up the clear autumn night sky will create an unforgettable memory.

Ken’s Point: For the best and most comfortable experience, securing paid seats on the riverbank in advance is the best strategy. Be prepared for major crowds in the free viewing areas. However, arranging tickets can be difficult without Japanese language skills, so please consult a travel agent if you need assistance.

  • Date (2025): September 20 (Sat)

⑤【International】Enjoy an Authentic Atmosphere: Oktoberfest in Shiba Park

A large-scale beer festival where you can enjoy authentic German beer and sausages in a prime location at the foot of Tokyo Tower. Enjoying a beer with lively music in the cool autumn breeze is exceptional.

Ken’s Point: The best part is just enjoying the open atmosphere! But since it’s popular, if you want to secure good seats for a group, it’s best to go in the early evening.

  • Dates (2025): September 12 (Fri) – 23 (Tue, Holiday)

【Main Event List】Tokyo Event Calendar for September 2025

Ken’s Final Advice

Attending an event is the best way to directly experience the current atmosphere and energy of Tokyo’s people, something you can’t get from a guidebook alone. Use this list to find an event that piques your interest.

However, before you head out, don’t forget to always double-check the latest information, such as times and ticket availability, on the official website.

I hope the best event experience will make your trip to Tokyo even more special!
