Introduction: Feel the Real Energy of Tokyo Through its Events

Hello! I’m Ken, the editor-in-chief of Tokyo Insider Guide.

As the lingering heat of September fades and the pleasant autumn breeze begins to blow, October is the best season for a city stroll. And during this time, various events are held throughout Tokyo where you can directly feel the city’s vibrant energy.

This isn’t just another event list. It’s a special two-part guide where I, Ken, have carefully selected events that I confidently recommend as a local, thinking “You absolutely have to go to this!” Plus, it includes a comprehensive “Main Event List” to help you with your planning. Now, let’s enjoy Tokyo in October even more!

【Ken’s Choice】My 5 Absolute Must-Go Events of the Month

Among the many events, I’ve handpicked five that I can vouch for, guaranteeing an amazing experience.

①【Gourmet】A Paradise for Ramen Lovers: Tokyo Ramen Festa 2025

This is one of Japan’s largest ramen events, bringing together famous ramen shops from all over the country. The biggest draw is the chance to taste the flavors of renowned regional shops that you could never eat in Tokyo otherwise. It’s bustling with people every year.

Ken’s Point: If you’re going with friends, I recommend buying ramen from different shops and sharing them. You won’t be able to enjoy the variety of flavors if you get full from just one bowl!

  • Dates: Oct 23 – Nov 3

②【Tradition】A Fantastic Procession of Light: Ikegami Honmonji O-eshiki Festival

This is a very traditional and large-scale Buddhist ceremony held to commemorate the anniversary of Saint Nichiren’s death. The main highlight is the “Mando Neri Kuyo” procession held on the evening of the 12th (around 6-11 PM). The sight of giant lanterns (Mando) decorated with cherry blossoms parading through the streets of Ikegami with a large crowd is truly spectacular.

Ken’s Point: You can experience the authentic energy of a real Japanese festival that many tourists miss. The solemn and magical night, different from a flashy fireworks display, is sure to become an unforgettable memory.

  • Dates: Oct 11 (Sat) – 13 (Mon, Holiday)

③【Culture】Get Lost in a Labyrinth of Books: Kanda Used Book Festival

This is an open-air used book market held once a year in Jimbocho, the world’s largest used book town. A “corridor of books” stretching about 500 meters appears along Yasukuni-dori, with wagons from used bookstores and publishers lined up.

Ken’s Point: You don’t necessarily have to buy a book. There are plenty of “paper treasures” that are fun just to look at, such as ukiyo-e prints, old maps, and movie posters. I recommend enjoying an intellectual stroll with a coffee in hand.

  • Dates (Approx.): Oct 25 (Sat) – Nov 3 (Mon, Holiday)

④【Subculture】The Whole Town is a Playground: Koenji Fes

A massive cultural festival where the entire town of Koenji—a hub for vintage clothing and music—becomes the stage. It’s packed with unique and chaotic events, from street live performances and art exhibits to delicious food stalls and the famous “Yuru-chara Pro-Wrestling.”

Ken’s Point: You’re guaranteed to find something interesting just by wandering around the town without any specific goal. If you want to experience the real, “now” culture of Tokyo, this is an event you absolutely can’t miss.

  • Dates: Oct 25 (Sat) – 26 (Sun)

⑤【International】Experience an Authentic Atmosphere: Tokyo Yosakoi

At four venues around Ikebukuro Station, over 100 dance teams from across the country will perform the energetic “Yosakoi” dance. The dynamic performances, featuring dancers in colorful costumes clicking wooden clappers called “naruko” to music that arranges traditional folk songs, are spectacular.

Ken’s Point: The stage at the main venue, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, is a must-see, but the “Nagashi-odori,” where each team dances through the streets, is also highly recommended for its immersive atmosphere.

  • Dates: Oct 11 (Sat) – 12 (Sun)

Ken’s Final Advice

Attending an event is the best way to directly experience the “now” atmosphere and energy of the people of Tokyo, which you can’t get from guidebooks alone. Use this list as a starting point to find an event that matches your interests.

However, before you go, don’t forget to always double-check the latest information, such as times and ticket availability, on the official website.
