Introduction
Hello! I’m Ken, editor-in-chief of Tokyo Insider Guide.
Do you think “Japan theme park = Disney”? While Disney is absolutely magical, Japan in 2026 is packed with unique parks that rival the Mouse!
From the world’s first “Donkey Kong” area in Osaka to immersive Ghibli worlds and a spot where you can enjoy roller coasters and natural hot springs right in the city center. I’ve hand-picked the “Theme Parks You Truly Must Visit Now”—the same places locals actually flock to on weekends.
Ken’s TIP: As of 2026, popular park tickets are a battleground. Assume “Same-day tickets” don’t exist. Always book in advance via official websites or apps before you head out!
【Ken’s Choice】 7 God-Tier Theme Parks to Visit in 2026
1. 【Ultimate Immersion】 Universal Studios Japan (USJ)
This is currently the hottest spot in Japan. With the addition of “Donkey Kong Country” to the massive Nintendo area, the level of immersion is world-class. Since it’s in Osaka, it requires a Shinkansen trip from Tokyo, so I recommend staying overnight and arriving early.
- Location: Osaka City, Osaka
- Ken’s Point: Attempting USJ without an “Express Pass” (paid priority ticket) is reckless. Buy time with money—that is the ironclad rule to enjoy USJ 120%!
2. 【The Urban Entertainment King】 Tokyo Dome City Attractions
An entertainment hub right in the middle of Tokyo. It condenses an amusement park, shopping mall, restaurants, and the natural hot spring “LaQua” into one area.
- Location: Bunkyo, Tokyo
- Ken’s Point: The biggest draw is that it’s “Free Entry.” You can buy tickets per attraction. This allows for a “luxurious adult day” where you ride the building-piercing coaster “Thunder Dolphin” and then soak in the natural hot springs at LaQua next door!
3. 【Into the Animation Soul】 Ghibli Park
There are no rides here. Instead, you’ll find the world of Ghibli films brought to life. While the reservation system has stabilized since all areas opened in 2024, tickets are still highly competitive in 2026.
- Location: Aichi Prefecture (near Nagoya)
- Ken’s Point: Tickets go on sale on the “10th day, two months in advance.” Missing this window makes booking nearly impossible. Set your calendar!
4. 【Thrill-Seeker’s Sanctuary】 Fuji-Q Highland
Experience Guinness-record-holding coasters while falling at 130 km/h with a stunning view of Mt. Fuji. It’s the ultimate pilgrimage for thrill-seekers.
- Location: Yamanashi Prefecture (approx. 2 hours by bus from Tokyo)
- Ken’s Point: Beyond the coasters, the “Super Scary Labyrinth of Fear” (one of the world’s longest haunted houses) is legendary. If you have a weak heart, stay away!
5. 【Wizardry Behind the Scenes】 Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo
Experience the production secrets behind the Harry Potter films at this first-of-its-kind facility in Asia. Built on the site of the former “Toshimaen” park, the access from central Tokyo is fantastic.
- Location: Nerima, Tokyo
- Ken’s Point: This isn’t a “rides” park; it’s a “walk-through exhibit.” It takes over 4 hours to see everything, so comfortable shoes are a must!
6. 【The Apex of Kawaii】 Sanrio Puroland
An entirely indoor park where you can meet Hello Kitty and My Melody. It’s the perfect sanctuary for rainy days or extreme summer heat.
- Location: Tama, Tokyo
- Ken’s Point: Recently, it has become a sanctuary for “Oshikatsu” (fandom activities). The quality of the parades is shockingly high—don’t be surprised if you see adults moved to tears!
7. 【The Retro Hidden Gem】 Asakusa Hanayashiki
Opened in 1853, this is Japan’s oldest amusement park. Located right next to Senso-ji Temple, its wooden roller coaster that grazes the eaves of local houses is, in a way, more thrilling than any modern ride.
- Location: Taito (Asakusa), Tokyo
- Ken’s Point: You can easily fit this in for 1–2 hours during your Asakusa tour. The Showa-era retro vibe is incredibly aesthetic and guaranteed to look great on your socials!
